Jennifer Young, University of Groningen, the Netherlands, has published The Law, Society, and Politics of Entertainment in Britain: Regulation or Self-Censorship? (Bloomsbury/Hart, 2026). Here is a description of the book from the publisher.
This open access book examines the rules shaping British political entertainment. Through interviews with comedians, writers, and producers, it challenges the idea that regulation dictates editorial choices and creates a cancel culture. The book reveals how self-censorship and social pressure play a deciding role in what we see in the media.
The book argues for the impartiality requirement to be dropped for satire, and broadcasters to be more robust in defending their output.
