According to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Hoover police officers responded just before 6 p.m. Monday to a report of a child drowning in the 3700 block of Chestnut Ridge Lane in Hoover.

“Upon arrival, deputies and officers learned that two good Samaritans had discovered a 2-year-old male victim in the swimming pool,” the release states. “The individuals immediately removed the child from the water and began performing CPR. Their lifesaving efforts were successful, and the child regained consciousness.”

Emergency medical personnel found the boy conscious and took him to Children’s of Alabama Hospital, where he was admitted for monitoring.

In the criminal complaint, authorities said the initial 911 call came from one of the two good Samaritans who rescued the toddler from the pool, according to local Fox affiliate WBRC.

Investigators learned during the preliminary inquiry that the boy’s 3-year-old sister had also been in the pool area. She was unharmed and led deputies to the family’s residence in the 100 block of Chestnut Lane.

The home was “unsecured and in disarray” when deputies arrived, according to the release. Investigators said the children had been left home alone by their mother, identified as Hurst.

Authorities got a phone number for Hurst, who soon returned to the residence. Following an interview with investigators, Hurst was taken into custody without incident.

Hurst remained in detention at the Jefferson County Jail, where a judge set her bond at $174,000.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway credited the two people who intervened at the pool with potentially saving the boy’s life.

“The actions of the good Samaritans were exemplary,” he said in a statement. “This could have very well been the difference between life and death. In addition, the investigative efforts of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Hoover Police Department officers were outstanding, to say the least. This incident demonstrates how everyone working together can make a significant difference in our communities.”
