We have written and tried to update the incident in 2024 involving a co-ed student who alleges she was raped by seven men at a Cornell University while all seem to have been under the influence of alcohol and ketamine.

Today’s new reports out of Manhattan are so much worse. Charges were brought against two men, ages 18 and 19 who visited two college students in their dormitory at the Fashion Institute of Technology in March of this year. The men offered the women what they said was cocaine. The women ingested it and lost consciousness. One of the women was raped during that time. When she did not awaken  after 45 minutes campus security was summoned. They concluded this was a fentanyl overdose and administered Narcan while emergency services were summoned. Three days later the woman who had been raped died of a fentanyl overdose. The other has recovered.

The men charged do not seem to be students at the college. F.I.T.’s campus is on the Lower West side of Manhattan. The alleged assailants are from the Bronx and Queens.

Lots of people are questioning the cost and benefits of a modern undergraduate degree. But rape and death are two outcomes no parent can countenance. We can blame the colleges, the cops, the district attorneys. But they are not providing the drugs nor are they able to intervene when bad things occur. There is no easy fix for this and any parent with a child living on an American college campus must sleep uneasily tonight. Kids are at risk in the dorms of lower Manhattan and on the bucolic campuses of western New York.
