Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, is recalling Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced in 8-ounce (227g) packages because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company announced the recall on October 9, 2026, and the FDA posted it on October 16.

The salmon was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The recalled product can be identified as follows:

Product: Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced

Net weight: 227g/8oz, vacuum-sealed plastic package, sold frozen

UPC: 4751048940099

Best before: 27.11.2027  Lot: D080-148

Country of origin: Latvia

The contamination was found through product sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Krasnyi Oktyabr is a wholesale distributor and did not make the salmon; the recall notice does not name the manufacturer. The company says it has told its customers to pull the product and notify their own customers.

No illnesses have been reported to date. Because the product is sold frozen and carries a best-before date in late 2027, consumers may still have it in their freezers. Anyone who has the recalled salmon should not eat it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions can be directed to Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at (718) 858-6720, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.

Ready-to-eat cold smoked fish is a well-known vehicle for Listeria. Cold smoking does not reach temperatures that kill the bacteria, the product is eaten without further cooking, and Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of serious illness.

Symptoms of invasive listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. In pregnant women, infection may cause only mild flu-like illness but can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Symptoms usually begin within two weeks of eating contaminated food but can appear as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after exposure. Anyone who ate the recalled salmon and develops these symptoms should contact a healthcare provider and mention the possible Listeria exposure.
