Weil Gotshal & Manges is winding down, but the firm isn’t quite gone from the wild (or should I say Weil-d) yet.
One tipster stumbled across a Weil ad still out there in the world, pitching the firm’s summer associate program. That’s the same summer program whose 1L recruiting webinar got canceled this week, and the same firm that was recently touting a new AI summer program (though that one was pre-wind-down vote). The tipster’s reaction: “Had to do a double take.”
To be fair to the marketing/recruiting people who haven’t pulled the ad yet — they’re probably too busy trying to find themselves new jobs.
Then there’s the conference circuit. Another tipster sent over a photo with this dispatch:
The irony of the day: As Weil prepares to wind down, I heard a big chunk of the leveraged finance industry is walking around the LSEG LPC conference wearing Weil-sponsored lanyards. Bittersweet brand visibility beyond the firm’s expiration date.
Again, seeing this post-firm collapse is completely reasonable, if awkward. Sponsorships and ad buys get locked in months in advance, long before anyone was gaming out a wind-down. So for a little while longer, Weil’s name will keep showing up at events, on ad placements, and around the necks of the very finance pros its lawyers used to bill.
Ninety-five years builds up a lot of branding, and it won’t all disappear overnight. The firm may be closing, but the swag is going to be around for a Weil longer.
