Building a Practice of Positive Change

The Injunctive and Informational Effects of Tort Law

April 23–24, 2027 | Stanford Law School | Free Registration

The Deborah L. Rhode Center at Stanford Law School is delighted to announce Building a Practice of Positive Change, a free, 1.5-day conference taking place on Stanford’s campus on April 23–24, 2027.

Anchored by two papers written by Professor Nora Freeman Engstrom and Lisa Qian, the conference explores what they call the injunctive and informational effects of tort law: tort law’s power to expose misconduct and hidden dangers, compel defendants to change their policies, practices, or products, and catalyze government reform—protecting the public long after individual cases conclude.

The conference will bring together some of the nation’s most accomplished attorneys, law professors, mediators, plaintiffs, and students to explore pressing questions, including:

  • What do injured clients really want from litigation?
  • How can lawyers secure meaningful, lasting reform through settlements?
  • How can lawyers resist secret settlements and nondisclosure agreements?
  • What duties do lawyers owe their clients—and the broader public?

California MCLE credit will be available. Confirmed speakers, listed on the attached Save the Date, include many leading figures from the plaintiffs’ bar.
