I understand that [Biglaw] is a very cut-throat environment, but just the level of greed combined with the lack of leadership from the top of the firm was truly disappointing. You had people on the management committee who signed up to lead the firm through whatever came, and instead of shepherding the firm through a very difficult time, they used their insider information to negotiate deals with other firms and oftentimes leaving associates behind.
— An anonymous Weil Gotshal associate, speaking to Bloomberg Law as the nearly century-old firm prepares to wind down and send nearly 600 associates into the job market. The associate said they received more than 100 LinkedIn requests from headhunters in the two days after Executive Partner Barry Wolf announced the news. Recruiter Blair Broser said associates “don’t have any leverage at this time,” while recruiter Summer Eberhard said Weil lawyers remain marketable for their credentials and sophisticated experience. Associates and staff have been told they’ll receive salary and benefits for 90 days, with bonuses available to those who stay until near year-end.
