A man Donald Trump pardoned for his January 6 conduct is back in federal custody, and if you guessed the new charge looks a whole lot like the old one… congratulations, you’ve been paying attention for the last five years.

Cleveland Grover Meredith Jr., 58, of Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of interstate communication of threats. According to the criminal complaint filed in the Northern District of Georgia, Meredith’s Facebook account posted on April 23, “ALL J6 Federal JUDGES will be EXECUTED!” The post was punctuated with a grinning emoji and a middle finger, in case the tone was unclear. A magistrate judge found probable cause on October 29.

That’s the same crime he pleaded guilty to in 2021, the only thing that’s changed is the target.

Back then, Meredith drove to Washington for Trump’s “will be wild” rally, hit car trouble, and arrived after the riot was over. He made up for lost time from his hotel about a mile from the Capitol, texting a relative that he would “put a bullet” in the head of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. When the FBI searched, agents found a 9mm handgun, an assault-style rifle with a telescopic sight, and roughly 2,500 rounds of ammunition. He got 28 months, but on January 20, 2025, he got a pardon, along with nearly 1,600 other people charged in connection with January 6. Meredith never made it to the riot, but the pardon proclamation covered conduct “at or near” the Capitol.

Meredith took Trump’s words literally on January 6. Trump told his supporters to come to Washington and fight like hell, and Meredith showed up with a rifle and a grudge against the Speaker of the House. Since then, Trump has spent his second term calling judges who rule against him “radical left lunatics” and demanding their impeachment. And Meredith allegedly did what he’d done before — he took the president at his word.

The April post wasn’t a one-off. On October 19, the same account allegedly posted a list of federal judges who had ruled against Trump or January 6 defendants, along with a warning that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “has plans 4U.” On October 14, according to the complaint, he posted, “Mark this post, my sheeple: The midterms will be an absolute MASSACRE.”

FBI Special Agent Richard Taylor’s complaint says, “Meredith’s history of violent online rhetoric indicates that he knowingly sent the message.” According to The New Yorker, he celebrated his pardon by demanding compensation for his time in prison. That fits right in with the administration’s plan to pay January 6 rioters on the taxpayer’s dime.

Threats against federal judges are up 327% in the Trump II era. Judges have gone on the record about life under siege: panic buttons, safe rooms, pizzas sent to their homes in the name of Judge Esther Salas’s murdered son. Salas, of the District of New Jersey, has blasted the DOJ for loudly condemning judges while saying very little about the threats against them. And the White House’s response to all this has been, at best, absolutely unhinged: condemn the threats, then call the targets leftist, crazy judges in the same breath.

The pardon told people like Meredith that violence on Trump’s behalf comes with a get-out-of-jail-free card. Trump’s recent rhetoric told them who to aim at next.
