It could take years to master the ins and outs of using Microsoft Word for complex legal document drafting, creating a drain on your ability to actually practice law.
DocStyle changes this dynamic with a focus on user experience and the ability to automate repetitive and supportive processes in creating legal documents.
CEO Chris Cangero knows these processes well — he’s been building legal technology products for the past 27 years.
Here, he shares the processes that make DocStyle so effective, the company’s new AI enhancement, and how lawyers should shape their continuing technology education.
ILTACON attendees can see DocStyle live at Booth 422. Feel free to book a meeting here.
In a few words, please introduce your company and what sets you apart.
DocStyle is a manufacturer of document productivity tools for law firms. Focusing on commercial or transactional legal practices, we help firms streamline their repurposing and review practices.
Our differentiator is within our flagship product, DocStyle. DocStyle is powered by an algorithmic engine of our own design that analyzes a legal document in its entirety and performs complex tasks normally handled by an expert in Microsoft Word.
Can you provide some more detail on the problems you solve and the benefits you provide?
Lawyers and their support teams struggle with Microsoft Word daily. To learn the depth of skills necessary to navigate the complexities of legal document drafting, one would need to dedicate years learning the ins and outs of the application.
At DocStyle, we design our solutions with the user experience in mind and automate as many of the repetitive or supportive processes as possible. Our tools perform the heavy lifting and in turn shift the focus for attorneys and legal assistants back where it belongs, on the practice of law.
DocStyle will perform document cleanup tasks, application of firm numbering and styles, building or fixing of cross references, advanced paragraph formatting and transformation, and PDF to Word conversion specifically optimized for legal organizations.
Is there anything new you’re showcasing at ILTACON this year? Anything on the horizon you’d like to spotlight?
This year we’re going to launch DocStyle AI — an enhancement that makes DocStyle accessible from inside LLMs. For more, see our press release here.
What do you think the legal tech industry is doing well? And what might it be missing?
One of the most difficult things to watch as a LegalTech founder are industry colleagues with LegalTech businesses struggling to recognize industry change and pivoting in time to stay relevant.
Artificial Intelligence is the most transformative technology introduced since the internet itself. Over the course of the next couple of years there will be a systemic shift in LegalTech between those who get it and those who don’t.
The industry is going to gain incredible technologies and capabilities, while simultaneously losing very bright minds and talented businesses to consolidation or the inability to pivot timely. Too much consolidation will limit choices, which could unintentionally hurt the legal industry’s ability to control costs and remain competitive. I plan on supporting fellow founders and helping them transition into this new era. Preserving and evolving industry knowledge is a win-win for both LegalTech and law firms.
What’s one thing lawyers can do to be more tech savvy?
This may come across as self-serving, but it’s too late to learn how to use applications like Microsoft Word. Use AI and learn how to recognize whether the information provided is qualified and accurate.
Manage outcomes rather than learn older tools and focus continuing technology education on understanding how to balance what you ask of AI with how much you contribute to the result. I use AI as a tool to compliment; I do not blindly trust or allow it to replace my years of experience.
What can ILTACON attendees expect when they stop by your booth?
ILTACON attendees will see a company that’s on the cutting edge of delivering advanced document tools.
They’re going to see a brand-new solution that, for the first time, allows for conversational access to repurpose, structure, and format firm documents. DocStyle AI will be the single-most impressive solution they see in the document space this year!
Is there anything else you’d like ILTACON attendees to know about you?
I’m a 27-year veteran LegalTech software manufacturer. I spent the first 15 years of my career building networks and ECM systems for mid-sized law firms.
Since 2009 I’ve been delivering solutions for law firms and only law firms. Solving problems for law firms early in my career provided me a strong foundation to understand the difficult challenges and how to creatively solve them through technology.
