September always feels like a reset to me. Summer is winding down, people are back from vacation and suddenly calendars are filling up again with conferences, events, client meetings, speaking engagements and everything else that seems to get packed into the fall.

It’s also a really good time to take a fresh look at your social media content. If you haven’t been posting as consistently as you wanted to over the summer, that’s okay. There are so many natural opportunities in September to get back into it without feeling like you have to reinvent the wheel or come up with something brilliant every time you post.

Whether you’re building your own personal brand, creating content for your company or managing social media for an organization, you can use what’s already happening around you as inspiration.

Here are some September content ideas to help you get started.

September Holidays and Events

  • Labor Day: Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer, but it’s also a natural opportunity to recognize your employees, colleagues and the people who contribute to your organization. You can also use it as a jumping-off point for content about careers, leadership, workplace trends or lessons you’ve learned from your own work.
  • International Day of Charity – September 5: Highlight a nonprofit you support, volunteer work, pro bono efforts or a cause that matters to you. The strongest posts usually focus on the organization and the people doing the work instead of making yourself or your company the center of the story.
  • Patriot Day – September 11: If you choose to post about September 11, keep the message thoughtful and focused on remembrance. If you or your organization has a meaningful connection to first responders, veterans or related organizations, you can also highlight those relationships where appropriate.
  • National Grandparents Day – September 13: Share a story about a grandparent, something they taught you or a lesson that has stayed with you. This can be a nice opportunity for a more personal post.
  • National IT Professionals Day – September 15: Recognize the people who keep your technology running or use the day to share content about technology, cybersecurity, AI or how technology is changing your industry.
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month – September 15 to October 15: Highlight the contributions and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino professionals, colleagues and leaders in your industry. You can also spotlight relevant organizations, initiatives, events and community involvement.
  • National Working Parents Day – September 16: Recognize the working parents in your organization or share your own experiences and perspectives on work, family, careers, flexibility and leadership.
  • American Business Women’s Day – September 22: Spotlight women in business who have influenced you, recognize women within your organization or share a story about a mentor, colleague, client or leader whose career you admire.
  • International Podcast Day – September 30: Share a podcast you host, a recent guest appearance or a few podcasts you regularly listen to. You can also spotlight episodes that have taught you something or introduced you to a new idea.

Use the Back-to-School Theme

You certainly don’t have to be going back to school to tap into the feeling of a fresh start that comes with September. This theme can work particularly well for educational content and posts that help your audience prepare for the busy months ahead.

  • Create a “101” series: Break down something complicated in your field into accessible posts or short videos. Think about what you know that your clients, colleagues or followers regularly ask you to explain.
  • Share September reset tips: What should people in your industry be thinking about as they head into the final months of the year? Turn those ideas into a short series of practical posts.
  • Highlight professional development: Share a course you’re taking, a conference you’re attending, a certification you earned or something new you’re learning. Companies can also spotlight employees who are developing new skills or sharing their knowledge with others.
  • Share what you’re learning: You don’t always have to be the person teaching. Posts about a useful book, podcast, conference session, conversation or industry development can make great content too.
  • Answer frequently asked questions: Think about the questions clients, customers, colleagues and prospects ask you over and over again. Each one can become a social media post, video or article.

Have Some Fun With September Content

Not every post needs to teach something or promote your work. Some of the most engaging content helps people get to know you and the people behind your organization.

  • National Read a Book Day – September 6: Share a book you’ve enjoyed, something you’re currently reading or a book that has influenced you professionally or personally. Companies can ask employees to contribute recommendations.
  • National Guacamole Day – September 16: Have some fun with this one if it fits your personality or company culture. An office guacamole contest, team lunch or debate over the best guacamole recipe can become easy social content.
  • National Ice Cream Cone Day – September 22: An office ice cream outing, team event or even your own trip for ice cream gives you an opportunity to share something more personal.
  • National Pancake Day – September 26: Use it as an excuse for a team breakfast or share your favorite breakfast spot.
  • National Coffee Day – September 29: Share your favorite coffee order, spotlight a local coffee shop or post a photo from a coffee meeting with a colleague or friend.

And of course, pets almost always perform well on social media. Share your own pet, introduce some of your colleagues’ pets or give people a glimpse of your four-legged coworkers.

Evergreen Content You Can Use All Year

Your September content shouldn’t depend entirely on holidays. A strong content strategy includes topics you can return to throughout the year.

  • Client or Customer Success Stories: Share a success story, project, result or experience where appropriate and with permission. Focus on the client or customer, the challenge and what made the work meaningful.
  • People Spotlights: Introduce the people behind your organization or spotlight someone in your network. Go beyond the standard bio and tell people something they’ll actually remember.
  • Tips and FAQs: Turn common questions into useful written posts, short-form videos, carousels and articles. This is one of the easiest ways to create content because the ideas are already coming from your day-to-day work.
  • Community Involvement: Share photos and stories from volunteer activities, nonprofit involvement, board service and community events. Focus on why the organization or cause matters.
  • Industry News and Updates: Help your audience understand what a development actually means for them. Sharing the news alone isn’t enough. Add context and explain why it matters.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Content: Conferences, meetings, office events, speaking engagements, business travel and everyday moments can all become content. These posts help people get to know you beyond your job title.
  • Testimonials: With permission, share what clients, customers or colleagues say about working with you or your organization. The best testimonials are specific about the experience and the value you provided.
  • Thought Leadership: Articles, newsletters, presentations, podcasts and webinars can all be repurposed into social media content. One piece of content can become several posts, a short video, a carousel, an email and more.
  • Events and Speaking Engagements: Create content before, during and after an event. Tell people you’re attending or speaking, share insights while you’re there and follow up afterward with photos, observations or useful points from the discussion.
  • Milestones: Anniversaries, promotions, career milestones, business milestones and other meaningful moments can all become strong posts when there’s a story behind them.
  • Repurpose What You Already Have: Go back through your best-performing articles and posts. Update them, turn them into another format or approach the topic from a different angle. Your audience likely didn’t see everything you published the first time and a good idea can be worth revisiting.

Turn Everyday Conversations Into Content

Some of your best content ideas are probably already coming up in your day-to-day conversations. Keep a running list of questions clients ask you, things you find yourself explaining over and over again, conversations that make you think and observations you make about your industry or work.

If someone asks you a question, there’s a good chance other people are wondering about it too. That question can become a LinkedIn post, article, short video or even the beginning of a larger content series.

You can do the same thing after meetings, conferences and events. Think about what you heard, what people were talking about and what you found useful. You don’t need to recap the entire event. Pick one idea and add your own perspective.

Turn Your Ideas Into a Content Plan

Having a list of ideas is helpful, but the next step is figuring out which ones make sense for you and what you want to be known for.

Start by choosing a few topics that connect to your work, your experience and the people you want to reach. Then mix those with posts that show more of who you are. Someone might first find you because of a helpful post about your area of expertise and then remember you because of a story you shared about your career, a conference you attended or even a book you recommended.

You can also get much more mileage out of every idea. If you write an article, pull several social posts from it. Turn one of those posts into a short video. Use a question from the comments as the topic for another post. Include the article in your newsletter. Revisit the topic a few months later from a different angle.

And pay attention to what people respond to. Which posts start conversations? Which ones lead to messages? What questions are people asking you? What topics keep coming up in conversations with clients and colleagues? Those are clues about what you should create more of.

Your content should help people understand what you know, what you care about and what it would be like to work with you. When you consistently share useful ideas and let people get to know you along the way, you give them more reasons to remember you when an opportunity comes up.

Make September Content Easier on Yourself

September is one of those months when there’s a lot to talk about on social media. People are back from summer vacations, fall events and conferences are starting and work tends to pick up quickly.

Take a look at what you already have on your calendar. A conference, speaking engagement, article, client meeting, event or new project can give you several things to post about. You can share something beforehand, take photos or videos while you’re there and follow up afterward with what you learned or who you met.

Also take a look at what you’ve already created. An older article can be updated, a post that did well can inspire another one and a written post can become a video. There’s no reason to keep coming up with brand-new ideas when you probably already have plenty of good ones.

The best place to start is with what you’re already doing and talking about every day. You probably have more great content ideas right in front of you than you realize.
