Apparently no one around Brett Kavanaugh has even the slightest sense of optics.

Shouldn’t there be someone in his orbit that scores high enough on a basic pattern recognition test to advise a guy best known to the country for sexual misconduct allegations — including an account from his college days involving a drunken dorm party where he made a classmate touch his penis — that he should not seek out photo opportunities in college dorms?

Apparently that person does not exist. Or they’re drunk.

That’s the justice making a little Kavanaugh stop by a Notre Dame dorm. Kavanaugh visits Notre Dame a lot these days because his daughter attends the school. That said, Notre Dame maintains single-sex dorms and Kavanaugh appears to be chilling with a bunch of bros so he’s found himself in some random dorm. Look, I know helicopter parenting has gotten bad, but just take your kid out to dinner or something. Because a parent going up into the dorms is a lot like a real Kavanaugh stop in that it’s a lengthy and mortifying ordeal no matter how short and unobtrusive they claim it will be.

“Josh Blackman’s Unemployed Barber” earns top marks as a social media handle. But one must appreciate how Kavanaugh looks like he fits right into a late night, beer-soaked conversation explaining to the rest of his lacrosse team “What if the color I see as blue is the color you see as red, and we just both learned to call it blue? And also Black people shouldn’t get to vote.”

The allegations against Kavanaugh were swept under the rug as Senate Republicans rushed to install another ideological ally on the Court. After Christine Blasey Ford detailed her experience at Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, Republicans conceded to allowing the FBI to look into the case. The Bureau’s hotline received some 4,500 tips and conducted exactly 10 interviews. After the fact, the FBI explained away its superficial probe by attesting that it had merely acted as an “investigative support provider” rather than an investigative agency. The tips went to Trump White House counsel without the FBI seriously following up on them. Sheldon Whitehouse and Chris Coons put the obvious question in writing: if nobody followed up, “it is difficult to understand the point of having a tip line at all.” Whitehouse’s 2024 report bluntly found the investigation to be a sham, controlled from within the Trump White House to give political cover to Senate Republicans.

Among the people who called that number was Kerry Berchem, an Akin Gump partner who overlapped with Kavanaugh at Yale and had text messages she believed bore on whether his sworn account held up. Nobody called her back.

On September 24, 2018, Notre Dame students and faculty wore black and walked out in solidarity with Blasey Ford. Eight years later, he is back sitting on panels and chilling in the dorms.
