A man and woman in Kentucky have been arrested after the woman’s toddlers allegedly ate about 20 “hemp gummies” and overdosed — and the defendants waited over five hours to call for help, authorities say.

Sean East, 33, was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center on Wednesday on charges of child abuse or neglect, according to jail records reviewed by Law&Crime. He is being held on a $20,000 cash bond.

Courtney Johnson, 30, is no longer listed as being in the jail, but regional Fox affiliate WDKY reports that she faces the same charges and was arrested before law enforcement apparently tied East to the case.

On July 26 at about noon, the Lexington Police Department and Lexington Fire Department were called to a home on the 200 block of Simba Way due to a report of two toddlers overdosing. The children — about 3 and 4 years old — were unconscious after “ingesting hemp gummies,” per court documents obtained by the area outlet.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Johnson, the children’s mother, reportedly told first responders that she left a container of “hemp gummies” out the night before and ate one before going to sleep. She allegedly added that she “likely left” the container on her bathroom sink, where the toddlers found and ate about 20 of them.

According to authorities, she said she didn’t realize what had happened until the following morning at about 7 a.m. However, police noted that no one reached out for help until more than five hours later.

Once Johnson was booked into jail, she apparently said on the phone that it was East, her husband, who allegedly left the gummies unsecured. Investigators searched their cellphones and reportedly found text messages showing East taking responsibility for the children eating the gummies.

He was arrested. Authorities noted in court documents that regardless of which adult allegedly left the gummies out, the charges would stand due to the “unreasonable amount of time” they took in asking for medical help for the children, per WDKY.
