On Wednesday night, Cooper was outside the Walmart located on South Easton Road in Wyncote, Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania. The area is about 12 miles north of Philadelphia.
Cooper “had just finished her shift at the Walmart and was by her car,” the DA’s office said. Suddenly, a person wearing a mask shot her dead.
At about 11:30 p.m., the Cheltenham Police Department was called to the parking lot about a shooting.
They found Cooper dead on the ground next to a white Nissan, local ABC affiliate WPVI reported. At least one bullet hole was on the rear door of the vehicle.
An autopsy was set to be conducted on Thursday, though its results are not yet clear. The Walmart was reportedly closed for the day after the shooting.
Authorities have not shared a description of the suspect, and Cooper’s daughter expressed her surprise that anyone would hurt her mother.
Cooper worked at the store for more than 20 years, her daughter told area Fox affiliate WTXF. She added that her mother treated everyone nicely.
The victim apparently just had her birthday on Oct. 19, her family added, saying Cooper left behind three children and three grandchildren.
The DA’s office asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Montgomery County detectives at 610-278-3368 or Cheltenham police at 215-885-1600, extension 499, or to call anonymously using extension 777.
