Inset: Laraven Davis. Background: Jiffy Lube located in the 5500 block of Floyd Road in Mableton, Georgia, where Davis allegedly abandoned her baby girl (WAGA).

A Georgia mother allegedly walked into a Jiffy Lube with her 6-month-old daughter in a stroller, handed the girl to an employee and walked away.

Laraven Davis, 35, stands accused of abandonment of a child and reckless conduct, both misdemeanors.

Officers with the Cobb County Police Department said in an email to Law&Crime that they responded to the Jiffy Lube located in the 5500 block of Floyd Road in Mableton, which is about 14 miles northwest of Atlanta.

Davis allegedly left the girl with the employee and walked out. Employees then called cops. The girl was in overall good health, but she was wearing soiled clothes and had several rashes, cops said.

Assistant manager Jarayya Mayes described the ordeal in an interview with local Fox affiliate WAGA.

“She came up to me and my co-worker, Elijah, with a stroller,” Mayes said. “And she was like, ‘Hey, doesn’t my baby look so cute? Is my baby so cute?’ We were like, yeah, baby’s adorable. And she was. She was absolutely adorable.”

Davis asked the employees to watch the girl because she had something to do, according to Mayes’ account. The defendant then allegedly walked out of the store.

“She just kept saying, ‘The paperwork is in the bag,'” Mayes told the TV station. “‘You guys can just have her if I don’t make it back.’ Once she said that, red flags immediately.”

The employees then called 911. Davis apparently returned to the store about 15 minutes later armed with a knife and demanded her baby back. Police had not yet arrived.

“Where’s the baby? I need the baby. I gotta go, I gotta go. Some stuff just went down. I gotta go,” Mayes recalled Davis saying.

Dispatchers urged the employees not to give the baby to the mother until police got there. Once officers arrived, they took Davis into custody.

An ambulance transported the baby to the hospital for treatment. Because Davis had no relatives to pick up the girl, the Division of Family and Children took custody of her, police said.

Mayes, a mother herself, told WAGA that it was a scary situation.

“As a mom, it broke me down, I did cry a lot,” Mayes said. “I was just a mom looking out for another kid. I just, I couldn’t let that baby go like that. That was heartbreaking.”

Davis remains in the Cobb County Jail on a $4,620 bond.
