Across the more than 1,300 locations that make up the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and our network of Veteran care, information technology (IT) is a crucial tool in maintaining safe, secure and up-to-date communication among our professionals.
Within this complex landscape, the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) is how we maintain seamless operations. Our IT professionals not only maintain but improve the Veteran experience by delivering innovative technologies and ensuring networks are working well.
If your skills lean more toward the technical side, a job in IT may be just the thing: A purpose-driven career that allows you to reach your highest potential by collaborating with some of the brightest minds on today’s most innovative projects.
The role of IT specialists
At VA, we’re looking for experts in data science, software engineering, product design, product management and user experience (UX) who are also passionate about using their skills to ensure Veterans and their families receive seamless care and services.
Our IT specialists help develop cutting-edge technology, advocate for Veteran needs and ensure we can meet our promises to Veterans across 4 major operational categories:
- Cybersecurity
- Product development and delivery
- Strategy, governance and business operations
- Technical infrastructure, operations and support
While some of this work may be couched in technical support—assisting customers with hardware or software—VA’s IT specialists are also forward thinking and could find themselves working on projects that are relevant to a specific area of expertise. You may find yourself:
- Working with healthcare, education and financial analysts to perform technical investigative research
- Analyzing computational models that inform Veterans’ benefits eligibility for healthcare, home loan guarantees or educational benefits
- Researching how electronic healthcare data can be used to deliver better care and services to Veterans
- Anticipating risks and developing action plans to support Veterans when IT systems fail
Our IT specialist roles make great early career opportunities, but also pave the way to bigger and better roles on our team. Supervisory roles and project management roles are also key in helping us meet the needs of the Veterans we serve.
The rewards of a VA career
By bringing your IT training and skills to work with us at VA, you’ll be able to take advantage of numerous employment benefits that will change not only your career, but your personal life as well.
We offer the choice of a variety of health plans, and all cover preexisting conditions. Additionally, we pay up to 75% of health premiums, a benefit that can continue into retirement, making our insurance some of the best you’ll find.
At VA, our employees receive 13 to 26 paid vacation/personal days, 13 sick days annually with no limit on accumulation, and 11 paid federal holidays each year, so your schedule can be balanced with your personal priorities.
And when you’re ready for a new challenge, we offer ongoing leadership development through every level of employment, whether it’s mandatory programs or competitive opportunities. We also have resources that make it easier for you to continue your education if you choose.
