Teens learn fate for 'dragging' 80-year-old man by his truck after he was 'tricked' out of it while grabbing dinner

All three suspects in a carjacking that proved fatal for an 80-year-old man grabbing dinner will serve years behind bars, Texas authorities announced.

Miguel Acosta, 20, was sentenced this week to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery earlier this year, according to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

Acosta’s co-defendant, 19-year-old Zachariah Aguirre, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of 80-year-old Larry Brister, the agency added. The third defendant, Gabriel Urbano, also 19, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

On Feb. 11, 2023, Brister was “making a quick dinner run” in the area of Stonewood Drive in San Antonio, the DA’s office said. At this time, Aguirre approached.

The then-15-year-old “tricked Brister into getting out of his truck to inspect his tire,” authorities further recount. Once Brister exited his vehicle, Aguirre “jumped into the driver’s side and drove away, knowingly dragging Brister as he tried to stop him from fleeing.”

The agency described the victim’s injuries as “severe.” His daughter went into more detail.

“He has brain bleeds, broken nose, a broken shoulder, broken ribs, collapsed lung, his leg is raw from the knee down, his fibula is broken,” Paige Roy told regional NBC affiliate WOAI. “Who does that to an 80 year old man? If you need the vehicle, to take the vehicle is one thing, but the brutal hateness, I can’t wrap my head around this.”

Brister was brought to an area hospital, “where he fought for his life for nearly five months before ultimately succumbing to his injuries,” per the DA’s office. All three teens were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery — before those charges were upgraded to murder after the victim died.

Urbano was reportedly also charged in a different aggravated robbery.

Still, this week, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales focused on Acosta, as he was the last one of the three defendants to be sentenced.

“Today’s sentence holds Miguel Acosta accountable for his role in a violent crime that forever changed the lives of Larry Brister and his family,” Gonzales said. “While no sentence can undo the harm experienced or the loss suffered by Mr. Brister’s loved ones, accountability matters. Our office will continue to stand with victims and their families and work to ensure those responsible for violent crimes are held accountable for their actions.”
