Husband places gun to 'suffering' wife's head and pulls the trigger, told cops 'believe me she's dead, no CPR is going to help her': Police

An 83-year-old Florida man is accused of fatally shooting his wife who suffered from chronic illness and “begged for her pain to stop for 45 minutes.”

Walter Edgerton III is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Sandra Edgerton in Venice.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Edgerton called 911 around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and reported his wife had died. He also asked for cops to come to the home, saying “believe me she’s dead, no CPR is going to help her.”

Paramedics arrived at the home and found the victim in a reclining chair with a blanket covering her head and upper body. Once the blanket was removed, they found Sandra Edgerton suffering from a gunshot wound to the right side of her head. She was pronounced dead.

He initially declined to speak with investigators without a lawyer present, but later agreed to speak with them while at the police station.

Post-Miranda, Walter Edgerton told cops that “after the victim begged for her pain to stop for 45 minutes, he placed a .22-caliber revolver against the right side of her head and pulled the trigger while rubbing her head with his other hand,” the affidavit said.

After shooting her, he wiped the blood from her head and covered her with a blanket before calling 911. The suspect said the victim was diagnosed with Lyme disease nearly 30 years ago and had suffered “chronic illness” ever since.

Sandra Edgerton was recently hospitalized after her husband found her vomiting blood. She underwent surgery for a bleeding ulcer and developed “severe breathing problems and constant suffering,” cops wrote. Her age was redacted from the affidavit.

Cops arrested Walter Edgerton and took him to the Sarasota County Jail, where he remains without bond.

He has a bond hearing on Friday and an arraignment on Oct. 16. He was appointed a public defender and has pleaded not guilty.
